Bronx County was the last of 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated. It’s the 3rd most densely populated counties in the U.S. about a quarter of it is open space, which includes Woodlawn Cemetary, Van Cortlandt Park and Pelham Bay Park, The NY Botantial Garden and the Bronx Zoo.
Bronx County is home to Poe Cottage, where author Edgar Allan Poe spent his last remaining years of his life. It’s also home to the NY Yankees, has maritime heritage as well as off off broadway shows.
Several colleges and universities are located in the Bronx, including Fordham University, State University of NY Maritime College in Fort Schuyler (Throggs Neck) and several colleges and community colleges.
The land area of the Bronx, includes several small islands in the East River and the Long Island Sound such as City Island and Hart Island. Rikers Island, also in the East River, contains the large jail complex for NYC and is part of the Bronx.
